The USB communication option enables a direct plug-and-play connection from a Doran scale to a PC via a USB port. As newer PCs often lack RS-232 serial ports, this option provides a modern interface for scale data. When the USB option is installed, the scale can be connected to a computer’s USB port and will be recognized as a virtual COM port device. This means existing software that works with serial data (like terminal programs or Doran’s Excelerator data collection software) can communicate with the scale through USB without modifications. The result is a convenient and driver-supported link that retains compatibility with legacy systems while using today’s standard ports.

Easy Connectivity
With USB, there is no need to configure baud rates or communication parameters. Simply connect the scale to the computer using a USB cable; the Windows operating system will automatically detect the device and prompt for a one-time driver installation if necessary. Once installed, the scale’s USB interface appears as a standard serial (COM) port to the PC. This plug-and-play approach makes setup very quick and user-friendly.
Expandability
USB supports connecting multiple devices through hubs. You can monitor and collect data from many scales at once – up to 127 USB devices can theoretically be connected to a single PC with hub expansion. This far exceeds the one-to-one limitation of a traditional serial port. For example, several Doran scales can feed data to one computer by using inexpensive USB hubs, each scale operating on its own virtual COM port.
Rugged & Washdown-Safe
Doran’s USB option is built to endure industrial environments. The indicator is fitted with a sealed USB bulkhead connector on the back (exceeding NEMA 4X/IP67 standards), with a screw-on cap to seal it when not in use. Optional heavy-duty USB cables are available (in 6 ft and 16 ft lengths) that include molded sealing caps, creating a watertight connection between the scale and the PC. This design allows you to use USB connectivity in washdown or dusty areas without worrying about water ingress or corrosion.
Flexible Usage
The USB standard cable length limit is about 16 feet (5 meters) for a single cable, which is sufficient for many bench-scale to PC setups. If longer distances are required, the use of active USB hubs or repeaters can extend the range up to approximately 80–96 feet total (by daisy-chaining hubs). This gives you flexibility in plant layout – you can still employ a USB connection even if the scale is across a large room, by using hub extensions. The USB option effectively bridges the gap between the scale and modern computers, ensuring seamless data collection in any setting.
