    RS-232 serial communication is the classic, time-tested standard for transmitting weight data from a scale to external devices. In the scale industry, RS-232 has been used since the introduction of personal computers, and it remains one of the most common interfaces. Every Doran scale comes equipped with at least one RS-232 port as a standard feature, providing a simple and reliable means to connect to printers, PCs, remote displays, or other equipment. This proven interface ensures that out-of-the-box, a Doran scale can immediately begin sending weight readings to whatever device you need.

    Industry Standard Interface

    Virtually all peripheral devices in weighing systems support RS-232. You can send data to ticket or label printers, connect to a scoreboard or remote display, interface with PLCs or control systems, or feed data into a computer application. This widespread compatibility makes RS-232 a go-to communication method for basic data logging and device control.

    Proven Reliability

    Over decades of use, RS-232 has proven to be an economical and dependable point-to-point link. It’s a straightforward wired connection (typically via a multi-pin serial connector) that is less complex than network-based communications. In many scenarios, a simple serial cable running from a scale to a nearby device gets the job done with minimal hassle or cost.

    Immediate Availability

    Because Doran includes RS-232 on all its indicators by default, no additional options or upgrades are needed to utilize it. A standard cable (often provided with the scale) can be connected to start transmitting data. Cable runs can be up to roughly 50 feet (15 m) in length for RS-232 without repeaters, giving flexibility for equipment placement on the factory floor. For longer distances or multi-drop scenarios, other interfaces (like RS-485 or network options) are recommended, but for most small-scale setups, RS-232 offers plenty of reach and simplicity.
